Le Forbici di Manitù are an Italian experimental collective band formed in 1983.
History of the group
1983-1992: From the beginnings to the Rosa Luxemburg Corporation
The group was born in 1983, formed by Manitù Rossi, the only name that will accompany the group throughout its journey, and the mysterious guitarist Satana Cianciulli, who exclusively signs the band’s first album entitled Saliva Calda published in 1990. The first works are self-produced on cassette tapes and published under the Rosa Luxemburg Corporation label. With these production methods they release numerous tracks on compilations such as The Luxemburg Party, and in addition to Saliva Calda also 1992’s Zona Di Invisibilità.
1992-2001: The new lineup
In the early 1990s music critic Vittore Baroni and Enrico Marani, already a member of TAC, joined the group. In 1994 the group thus formed, worked on the production of their first album on vinyl entitled Trivelogue, which was released only two years later preceded by Quadrivelogue composed of recordings from the same period and the collaborative album with the eponymous collective Luther Blissett – The Original Soundracks.
1999 saw the release of the mini album Aggy Polly Loggy and the album Play & Remix Lieutenent Murnau (1980-1984) tribute to Baroni’s previous project, Lieutenent Murnau. The latter in particular came about through the interest of Nigel Aynes of Nocturnal Emissions, who asked Baroni if he could release a collection of tracks from that musical project on his Earthly Delights label. Baroni then decided to relaunch it, offering a reinterpretation of the earlier tracks in a Le Forbici di Manitu key, inserting and tampering with many of the most important songs of the time, from “The Head of Janus,” to “Taboo,” to “The Mercy Bit (MITTHBTLS).”
In 2001, Infanzia di M (Childhood of M) was released by Snowdonia Disks, which contained eight tracks recorded in 1989 and restored 10 years later in a sort of concept album centered on Rossi’s youth and composed of instrumental tracks where different genres blend together (new wave, industrial, techno, classical music) and in which Massimo Pavarini plays on percussion.
2001-2016: From Terror in Space to Tinnitus Tales.
In 2002, Le Forbici di Manitu released Terrore nello spazio, a personal soundtrack to Mario Bava’s 1965 film of the same name, featuring SmallVoices’ production for an album that mixes jazzy melodies with Lounge atmospheres, sound planes and electronic rhythms with chamber music.
Also for SmallVoices, the double CD Tagliare was released in 2006. The album features tracks composed by the group on one CD, while on the other the group invites other musicians to reinterpret or remix their songs, thus hosting artists such as Teho Teardo, Emma Peel Sons, Technogod, valvola, Duozero and others.
In 2010 the return of the collaboration with Snowdonia discs sanctioned the release of the album L’isola (with book by Alda Teodorani illustrated by Emanuela Biancuzzi). In 2014, Le Forbici di Manitu celebrated their 30 years of activity with the publication of Automitoantologia (1983-2013) 30 years of clippings, rarities and unreleased works. In 2016, the themed project “Tinnitus Tales,” dedicated to the problem of tinnitus or tinnitus for listeners of noisy music, a triple box set attributed to Le Forbici di Manitù & Friends featuring more than fifty international musicians and artists as guests, is released.
